さて、

書道の大切な道具に、和紙があります。

2014年に、次の3つの和紙がユネスコの無形文化遺産に登録されました。

１．「石州半紙（せきしゅうばんし）」（島根県浜田市）

２．「本美濃紙（ほんみのし）」（岐阜県美濃市）

３．「細川紙（ほそかわし）」（埼玉県小川町、東秩父村）

 

Japanese paper is an important tool of Japanese calligraphy.

In 2014, the following three washi, Japanese traditional paper, were registered as UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

1. “Sekisyu Paper” (Hamada-shi, Shimane Prefecture)

2. “HonMino paper ” (Mino City, Gifu Prefecture)

3. “Hosokawa Paper” (Ogawa town, Saitama Prefecture)

 

この中で、小川町を今日はとりあげます。

Among them, I will take up Ogawamachi today.

 

小川町は慈光寺があったからこそ、発展しました。

Ogawamachi was developed because there was Zikkoji temple.

慈光寺は、国宝のお経を沢山持っているお寺です。

今日は、

・慈光寺がなぜ、国宝級の写経を数多く持っているのか、

・そして、なぜ、小川町で和紙産業が発達したのか、

について、まとめてゆきます。

Jikoji temple  has plenty of national treasures.

today, I’d like to write about below.

· Why does Jikoji temple have many national treasure,

· Why did the Japanese paper industry develop in Ogawa  town.

 

 

慈光寺は、鎌倉の鬼門に位置します。

鬼門を守ることは、近代以前の政府にとって大切なこと。

そしてまた、ここは、鎌倉と上州（群馬）を結ぶ鎌倉街道に面しています。

Jikoji temple is located in north east of Kamakura.

In the northeast, in Chinese thought, it is a direction that the evil spirit enters easily.

 

To protect the northeast was important to the government before the modern era.

And here also facing the Kamakura road connecting Kamakura and Gumma, north of Tokyo.

 

慈光寺は

・鬼門を守るために、

・街道を監視するために、

鎌倉幕府から保護されました。

Jikoji temple was protected because

· To protect the northeast,

· To monitor the highway, Kamakura rout.

 

きっと、これらのために、慈光寺は当時はお金持ちだったんでしょう。

豪華な装飾経を幾つも持てたのも、資金力あってのことだと思います。

Surely, for these reasons, Jikoji temple was probably rich at that time.

I think that why this temple could have lots of luxurious ornamental scrolls.

 

 

では、なぜ小川町で和紙が盛んにつくられたのでしょうか？

So why was Japanese paper made actively in Ogawa town?

 

 

お寺は、写経や記録のために、和紙を消費します。

大切な文書は、京都から持ってきた紙に書きましたが、

日常的な内容は、地元の小川町で作られた紙を使っていたと考えられます。

Temples consumed Japanese paper for making scrolls of scripts and recording of daily life.

The temple used paper from Kyoto for important documents,

But, for everyday content they used the paper made in local Ogawa town.

 

だから、小川町で和紙産業が発達しました。

Therefore, the Japanese paper industry developed in Ogawa town.

 

また、話はそれますが、

お坊さんは、眠気覚ましにお茶を飲みます。

お茶は、お薬としても使われていたとか。

お茶を作って、慈光寺に持ってゆけば、お寺が買ってくれる。

そうなると、お茶も地元の産業になります。

それで、狭山茶が有名になったわけです。

 

Also,

The monk drinks tea for drowsiness.

Tea was also used as medicine.

If people in the town made tea and brought it to Jikoji temple, the temple bought it.

Then, tea became a local industry, too.

That is why Sayama Tea has become famous.
