先日、琵琶ワークショップに参加しました。
I recently joined the biwa(Japanese lute) workshop.
「琵琶」という楽器は、一種類としかないと思っていました。
I thought that there was only one kind of instruments called “biwa”, Japanese lute.
が、どうも違うようです。
There seems to be some differences.
今回は、似ているようで違う、「薩摩琵琶」と「筑前琵琶」についてまとめます。
This time, I will summarize about “Satsuma biwa” and “Chikuzen biwa” as they seem to be similar.

１．琵琶の起源 Origin of biwa
琵琶のルーツは、西アジア。
シルクロードを経て、7世紀ごろに中国から日本へやってきました。
現在、雅楽に使われている琵琶は、奈良時代の古い形のままだそうです。
The biwa’s roots are West Asia.
After going through the Silk Road, it came to Japan from China around the 7th century.
It seems that Biwa currently used for Gagaku, Japanese traditional music, is still in its old shape in the Nara period, 7C.
２．盲僧琵琶 Blind priest playing Biwa
17世紀ごろ、江戸時代に九州地方で作られた琵琶です。
何かの争いに敗れた演奏者が、三味線を使用して演奏することができなくなりました。
そこで、琵琶を三味線風に改造して、演奏し始めたんだそう。
これが18世紀・19世紀ごろに薩摩琵琶や筑前琵琶に変化していったようです。
This is a kind of biwa made in the Kyushu district around the 17th century in the Edo period.
The performers of shamisens, three-stringed Japanese lute, who lost a fight between players was prohibited to play their shamisens.
Therefore, they remodeled Biwa as a shamisen style and began playing.
It seems that this changed to Satsuma biwa and Chikuzen Biwa around the 18th and 19th centuries.
３．薩摩琵琶と筑前琵琶の違い Difference between Satsuma biwa and Chikuzen Biwa
見てすぐにわかる二つの琵琶の違いは、
The difference between the two Biwa,

です。

もちろん、
③楽譜の書き方
も違います。

それぞれの違いを、写真で見てみましょう。

まず、
First,
①弦の数
です。
薩摩琵琶は4本。
筑前琵琶は5本ですね。
① Number of strings
Satsuma biwa has four strings.
Chikuzen biwa has five strings.
②撥の形
も、違いますね。
② Shape of plectrum
Well,
薩摩琵琶は大きくて、一枚板。
Satsuma biwa has a big plectrum and it made from single board.
筑前琵琶は接いで作っています。
Chikuzen Biwa has smaller plectrum, using some spliced board.

Then,
まず、弦の数が違うことから、
Firstly, as the number of strings is different,
薩摩琵琶では4線、
Satsuma biwa’s score has 4 lines.
筑前琵琶では5線ひかれています。
In Chikuzen Biwa’s score has five lines.
そして、音の表現のしかたもちがいます。
And the way of expression of sound is different.
薩摩琵琶では、ドテシャン、なんだか迫力がありますが、
筑前琵琶では、チリチリチリチリ、可愛い感じがします。
Satsuma biwa’s score says “Doshan”, there is something impressive,
Chikuzen biwa’s score says “Chile Chirichiriri”, I feel cute.
実際に楽器に触らせていただいて、
左手の押さえぐあいで、音がグワングワンと音階が変る設計になっているのが、ギターとは違うんだなぁと思いました。
演奏者の技巧とか、感情表現とか、
熟練してくるにつれて、表情を豊かにしていくことができる、
Actually I could touch the instruments,
I thought that it is different from the guitar that the musical scale is changed by the difference of the pushing pressure of the left hand.
The performer’s skills influences emotional expression,
so if you become skilled, you can enrich your facial expressions.
表現の幅がある楽器ではないかと思いました。
I thought it was a musical instrument with a wide range of expression.
