都内には、あちこちに古いイチョウがあります。
There are old ginkgo in various places in Tokyo.
これは、麻布の善福寺の逆さイチョウです。
後ろに回ると、空襲で焼けた跡があります。
This is the ginkgo of Zenpukuji of Azabu.
Turning to the back, there are marks burned by air raids.
東京は、火事も多く、空襲では都心のほとんどが焼け落ちました。
それなのに、どうしてイチョウの大木があちこち残っているのでしょうか？
Tokyo had many fires, and most of the city center burnt down in air raids of WWⅡ.
But why are there many big old tree of ginkgo?
理由は、イチョウが沢山の水分を含んでいるからです。
The reason is that ginkgo contains a lot of moisture.
イチョウは、3年干さないと、材木として使えないほど、水分を含んでいると言われています。
Ginkgo is said to contain moisture so much that it can not be used as timber if it is not dried for 3 years.
イチョウが神社仏閣で多くみられるのは、
防火の役目を果たしているからかもしれません。
Many ginkgo are found in shrines and temples,
It may be because it fulfills the function of fire prevention.
それから、樹齢600年越えの古いイチョウにはメスが残っていないんだそうです。
Also, it seems that there are no females in the older ginkgo over the age of 600 years.
メスの木には、匂いの強い銀杏がなります。
A female tree has a lot of nuts which have strong bad smell in autumn.
昔は、
匂い＝呪い
と思って、雌は切ってしまったのかもしれませんね。
In the past,
People thought Smell = curse,
I think, the female may have been cut by people.
