現在、八重洲と言えば東京駅の大丸側ですね。
ここは、地上にはグランルーフ、地下にはキャラクターストリートやラーメンストリートができて、活気のある場所です。

Talking about Yaesu, it’s location is Daimaru side of Tokyo station.
Here is a lively place with ground roof on the ground, character street and ramen street in the basement.

でも、最初の八重洲は、今の場所ではありませんでした。
一体どこにあったのでしょうか。

But this place wasn’t the first Yaesu.
Where was it all together?

1．ヤン・ヨーステン
2．大名小路

1．ヤン・ヨーステン

ヤン・ヨーステンというオランダ人の名前と聞いたことがありませんか。
八重洲の語源は、この方のお名前と言われています。

Have you heard that it is the name of the Dutchman Yang  Yosten?
The etymology of Yaesu is said to be the name of this person.

ヤン・ヨーステンは、オランダ船リーフデ号に乗って日本に漂着しました。

1600年のことです。

Yang  Yosten drifted to Japan on a Dutch vessel Lifede.

It was 1600 a.d.

 

この時、航海士として一緒だったのがイギリス人のウィリアム・アダムズです。日本名は三浦按針。

William Adams who was a British navigator came with him. His Japanese name is Miura Anjin.

 

一方、ヤン・ヨーステンの日本名は耶楊子（やようす）です。

Meanwhile, Yang Yosten’s Japanese name of is Yayosu .

 

外国の方のお名前は、日本人にとって発音しにくいものです。ですので、やんようすてん→やんようす→やようす→耶楊子（やようす）と呼ばれるようになりました。

The names of foreigners are difficult to pronounce for Japanese people. So it came to be called Yan yo u su → Yayosu.

 

ヤン・ヨーステンは初代将軍徳川家康に親任されて、江戸城の内堀内に家をもらっています。

Yang was appointed to the first generals Tokuya Ieyasu, and given a house near from Uchibori(inner moat) of Edo Castle.

 

さらっと書きましたが、これは、すごいことではないかと思います。

将軍から「家をプレゼント」してもらってるんですよ。しかも、将軍の自宅から近いところです。

家康と言えば、とても警戒心の強いお方です。江戸の主要な街道には、自分の信頼のおける家臣を見張り役として配置したり、武蔵野台地から直接攻め込まれないように神田川を人工的に掘削して外堀を創ったり。信頼できない外様は、遠く離れたところに配置したり。何かあるとすぐに大名家をお取り潰しにしてしまったり。

I think this is awesome.

He got a “home gift” from the general. Moreover, it lovated near the general house.

Speaking of Ieyasu, he is  very famous for cautiousness. On the main roads of Edo, he placed the most trustee as his guards, or artificially excavate the Kanda River so as not to be directly attacked by the Musashinojidai hill area.

 

そんな、警戒心の強い家康に信頼されて、江戸城本丸から歩いてすぐの場所に家をもらうなんて、ヤン・ヨーステンの一体何がそうさせたのでしょうか。ヤン・ヨーステンという方は、相当人懐っこさを持っていた方ではないかと思います。

I wonder what made Ieyasu trast Yang Yosten.

 

2．大名小路

ヤン・ヨーステンが家康から家をもらって住んでいたあたりの場所は、一体どこだったのでしょうか？

丸ビルの南側に行きますと、駐輪場に紛れて、こんな船の像があります。

Where was the place around where Yang Yosten lived and got a house from Ieyasu?

The south side of the Marunouchi Building, you can see a statue of such a ship.

1980年にオランダ国王が日本にいらした際のプレゼント。

ヤンが乗ってきたリーフデ号の像です。

ここは、江戸時代は大名小路と言われた所です。

このあたりには、老中をはじめ、有力な大名の上屋敷が並んでいました。

This is a present from the King of the Netherlands came to Japan in 1980.

This is the statue of the Liefde which came Japan with Mr. Yan in 1600.

This place was called Daimyoji Road during Edo era.

Around this area, there were lots of daimyo’s mansions, including member of the Shogun’s Council of Elders and powerful lords.

ここから近い、日比谷公園近くに家をもらって住んでいたんだそうです。

Close from here, he got a house in nearby Hibiya Park.

3．八代洲（やよす）河岸

ヤン・ヨーステンにちなんで、この付近の内堀のことを、八代洲（やよす）河岸と呼んでいたんだそうです。

そして、明治に入ってから、丸の内1丁目あたりは、しばらく八重洲と呼ばれていました。

Inner moat which near from his house was called “Yayosu ” riverbank.

And since Meiji Period, Marunouchi 1 – chome was called Yaesu for a while.

 

4．都電と八重洲（Old Tokyo Rail  and Yaesu)

1904年の暮、新常盤橋 と新橋駅を結ぶ都電が開通します。

その際に、呉服橋と鍛冶橋の間の停車場名に「東京駅八重洲口」が採用されました。

丸の内側から広域に八重洲という地名が使われていましたが、ここで、駅名に八重洲が使われたことが、後に八このあたりが八重洲とよばれるきっかけではないかと思います。

In 1904, the Toden Rail way connecting Shinpei Tokiwabashi and Shimbashi Station was opened.

At that time, “Tokyo Station Yaesu exit” was adopted as the station name between GohukuBashi Bridge and KajiBashi Bridge.

The place name of Yaesu was used widely from the Marunouchi side, but the station name of Yaesu was used for long time, and this area is called Yaesu later.

How was it?

 

日比谷付近のヤン・ヨーステン（やようす）の御屋敷、

これにちなんだ内堀の呼び名がヤヨスとなり、

明治になって丸の内から八重洲側にかけて広域に八重洲と呼ばれるようになり、

最終的には、都電の東京八重洲口付近が八重洲という地名を使い続けた、

ということでした。

 

The mansion of Yang · Yoosten (Yayousu) near Hibiya,

after this,  Yayosu became an area name and was used for the nick name of inner moat.

In the Meiji era “Yaesu” was used for the name of wide area from Marunouchi to Yaesu side,

Ultimately, the area around the Tokyo Yaesu station of old Toden Railway is using the place name “Yaesu”.

 

ドンドン、建物が建て替わる東京駅付近ですが、

400年前に活躍された方の痕跡が今でも残っているんですね。

Now, many buildings are rebuilt or under construction around Tokyo station,

There are still traces of those who lived 400 years ago.
