東京駅から1時間ほど電車に揺られて、

柴又の帝釈天に行ってきました。

I took a train for about an hour from Tokyo station,

I’ve been to Shibamata’s temple.

ここは何と言っても寅さんで有名ですね。

駅前には、寅さんとさくらさんの像が目立っています。

This place is famous for Tora-san movie between Japanese anyway.

That’s why, in front of the station, the statues of Tora – san and Sakura – san are prominent.

でも、私がお勧めしたいのは、帝釈天の彫刻です。

But, what I would like to recommend is the sculpture of Taishakuten.

今日は、帝釈天の彫刻を何点かご紹介します。

帝釈天には、数々の彫刻が施されています。

門を見ても、本堂を見ても、眺めているだけで気持ちが良い彫刻ばかりです。

Today, I will introduce some of the sculptures of Taishakuten.

ですが、何と言ってもお薦めなのが、帝釈堂の彫刻です。

I’d like to recommend  the sculptures of Taishaku-do.

大正から昭和にかけての名工10人が、法華経の説話を彫っているんです。

Ten masterpieces from Taisho to Showa, early 20C, are engraved, which theme are narratives of the Lotus Sutra.

どれも、欅の一枚板に細々と彫っています。

一度集めた欅の木材でしたが、1923年、対象12年の関東大震災でダメになってしまったんですね。

その後、もう一度日本全国から木材を集めて、

ようやく出来上がったものなんです。

Each of them is engraved on a single plate of Zelkova tree.

The plates were collected , but in 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake attacked Tokyo, and these were broken.

After that,  wood plate were corrected from all over Japan again.

とても細かいのに、表情が豊か。

Each part is very small but rich in expression.

庭園もお薦めです。

I’d like to recommend the Japanese garden, too.
